Hey everyone, it's the 31st, that means this is the final update of the month. I'll be posting a list of my favorite - and not so favorite - doodles from this month, and the last picture will be the final sketch for May. Let's get started!

This one sits at the bottom of the list 'cause it's just kinda boring, and upon further review I don't really like the way it was rendered.

This one needs contrast, like, a lot. More contrast plz, thnx.

I sort of liked where this one was going, there's something neat in there potential wise, but it just didn't happen. It's not bad - but it definitely could be better.

I kind of like this one, it sort of looks like a few different things, but it mostly looks like I'm focusing on a closeup of someone's nostrils.

This one's in the middle of the list because I think the post below dos a better job of conveying a human form in a high contrast image.

I really like how the overall shape of the figure in this image isn't extremely well defined, but you can still tell it's a humanoid figure. I also enjoy the fact that it looks to be in motion.

This piece made it to the fourth spot on the list because it has super interesting texture, and really neat lighting (even if it doesn't really make sense).

This drawing is the reason why my top pick of this month exists, and for that reason alone it's placed pretty high up. However, it actually looks really cool too! I love the sheen on the ovoid "head" of the figure.

This one is really cool because it reminds me a bit of a tormented spirit of some kind, it looks like it's about to reach just out of frame and grab someone, and a I really like that!

This piece is probably one of my favorite things I've done this year. There's a lot of emotion and expression in the eyes, and that's something I've always struggled with. Super proud of this one.

Alright, so without further ado, here's the final doodle for May.

This one's alright, my top pick's rather a tough act to follow, but I'm pretty happy with this doodle overall.

Well that's it, one more month down, seven more to go! I know my doodles this month were a bit hueless, but I'm thinking June's gonna be a whole lot more colorful! Check back tomorrow for something new, thanks for reading!

Hey everyone, it's time for another update!

Here's what I've got for you today.

Today I was playing around with some different brush settings and that's how I came up with the texture in the background. It looked cool, but it needed a little something extra. I drew a simple figure in white that would pop out against the dark background, and that was it, doodle done!

That's all for today. Don't forget to check back tomorrow since it'll be the last update of the month. I'll be doing a recap of my favorites - and not so favorites - along with posting my last doodle. See you then!

Hey everyone, it's time for another update.

Here's what I've got for you today!

I've always loved the way fabric folds and gathers, I was trying to showcase a little bit of that here with this cloaked figure. I didn't get to put too much time into this since it's just a doodle, but I think doing a fabric study sometime would be really cool!

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Hey everyone, it's time for another update!

Here's what I've got for you today.

In this doodle I tried to capture the feeling of movement in my subject, and I also wanted it to look barely illuminated by ambient light in the background. I think I did an alright job, Thoughtfully rendering light in an image is one of the hardest things about drawing or painting, because it's what adds the most realness to an image. This was especially hard here because there's not a lot of contrast, I did that intentionally to make this a little more difficult. I definitely want to do more studies like this in the future.

Well, that's all for today. Check back tomorrow for something new!

Hey everyone, it's time for another update!

Here's what I've got for you today.

Today's doodle is more abstract than the last few, I like this one a lot though. It kinda looks like a cool graphic pattern you'd see on a t-shirt or something. My favorite part's the white strip atop the black gradient, it really pops!

That's all for this update, check back tomorrow for something new.

Hey everyone, it's update time again!

Here's what I've got for you today.

This sketch turned out to look something like a humanoid alien creature. I'm trying to work more hard edges into my drawings, and I think I was pretty successful here, since it definitely looks like he's wearing some kind of armor.

That's all for this post, check back tomorrow for something new!

Monday, May 25, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for another update!

Here's what I've got for you today.

I ended up drawing this rather odd form, and there was a gap in the shape, so I decided to paint a face in there. Voila! It looks like a knight. Kinda cool, right?

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Sunday, May 24, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time!

This one's quite a bit different from my last updates, or any of other posts I've done for that matter.

This actually started out as an environmental sketch. I was trying to draw some ruined buildings and when they ended up looking like legs, I ran with it! She's a female android in a rather suggestive pose, so I drew her on a stage in a night club. I wanted this to look like a photo that could have been taken by someone there, in a moment between the lights flashing - when the brightest thing in the room were her glowing eyes. I think it came out pretty cool, I also really like the story element of the image. Who knows, it might be something I try to create a finished piece from in the future!

Well, that's all for today. Check back tomorrow for something new!

Saturday, May 23, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for another update.

Here's what I came up with today.

This piece came from a place of stress, anxiety, and a few other emotions. That's a great thing though! Most of the work I've done and posted this year has been a demonstration of technical skill, but I think this is the first piece I've completed that truly comes from feelings I've had. That's what art is ultimately about (in my mind), using a medium of your choice to express yourself and convey those feelings to others. Even though this image is rather dark, it's something I can look at be proud of, because I feel like I succeeded in producing something that really is "art" as I've defined it.

That's all for this update, don't forget to check back tomorrow to see something new!

Friday, May 22, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for a new post!

Here's what I came up with today.

This one's an abstract gestural sketch, one that I really like! I almost uploaded it without that slight grey gradient at the bottom of the figure, but I thought it needed a little something extra to explain its shape, and that fit the bill.

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Thursday, May 21, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time!

Here's what I came up with today.

I thought my abstract doodle from yesterday needed a friend, so that's how this one came to be. I'm really enjoying playing around with different styles in my doodles, it's fun to see the range of things you can produce when you don't lock yourself down to one particular way of drawing.

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Hey everyone, it's update time again!

Here's what I've got for you today.

As simple as this piece is, I'm absolutely in love with it. It only took a few moments to produce, but I think it's got a rather powerful impact to it. It looks like it's a photo taken by a scanning electron microscope, I'm a huge fan of images made with those things, so it's pretty neat I produced something that reminded me of them.

Well, that's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for a new doodle.

Here's what I came up with today.

I ended up drawing this pose that I really liked, so I added in some texture with the chalk brush in Photoshop, then put some soft noisy highlights on top.I also darkened the background on the bottom and right side with a big fuzzy brush, and added a tiny bit of brightness in the top left corner. It sort of gives the image a look of vignetting you'd see in a photograph.

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Monday, May 18, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for a new doodle!

Here's what I've got for you today.

I started scribbling a bit and came up with these two big shapes, I ended up thinking they looked kinda like mountains, but I wanted to make them a little more interesting - so I gave them a metallic texture. I think it came out pretty neat. I also added some mist or smoke billowing over those forms in the background to give them a bit more dimension.

Check back tomorrow for something new!

Sunday, May 17, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time!

What I posted yesterday was a little on the simplistic side, I guess I tried to compensate for that with today's post, check it out.

I really like this one! It's got a cool alien-bug kind of look. The lighting's a bit all over the place, but that doesn't bother me too much. This was a fun doodle, and that's exactly what these should be!

Don't forget to check back tomorrow for something new, thanks for stopping by!

Saturday, May 16, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time!

Here's what I came up with today.

I honestly think I'm a bit too sleepy to type anything remotely insightful about this, but I do think it looks pretty cool! There's a nice bit of figure ground reversal happening, which is neat, and that's about all I have to say about that!

Check back tomorrow for something new (and hopefully more coherent)! Thanks for stopping by.

Friday, May 15, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for another update!

Here's what I came up with today.

This was just a few dark splotches at first, but after connecting them it looked to me like a person, so developed the silhouette to reflect that. I think it came out alright. I was trying to emulate what I did yesterday a bit, but I couldn't quite crack it. There was a lot of really good depth in that piece, this one's a little on the flat side. It's still interesting though, might be something I come back to and work on a little more.

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Thursday, May 14, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time again.

Here's what I came up with today.

This one's pretty dark and rather strange, I love it. It looks like some kind of spirit contorted and in anguish. I'm really enjoying working in black and white, it's fantastic how much drama you can create without color!

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for another update.

And now for something completely different!

I tried sketching something similar to what I've been doing for the past couple of days, but it just wasn't happening, so I ended up with this instead. It's a pretty basic environmental drawing, I like it though. My favorite part is the atmosphere in the background, it's got a nice hazy look that gives the image a nice amount of depth.

That's all for this post, check back tomorrow for something new!

Tuesday, May 12, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time again!

Looks like we've got another animal-inspired doodle today, check it out.

This one looks like a bird of some kind, like a stork or an egret, just as it's about to start preening. I love the look and motion of long necked birds, they're something that's so elegant about it.

That's all for today, stop by tomorrow to see something new!

Monday, May 11, 2015

Hey everyone, here's the update for today!

I was sort of lost this evening when I sat down to sketch, I scribbled a little bit but didn't like anything I came up with. Then this just kinda popped up on the page, take a look!

It reminds me of a giant prawn, I don't really like to eat them, but I think they're pretty neat looking creatures.

Check back tomorrow for something new, who knows, it might be a giant shrimp monster!

Sunday, May 10, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for another update!

Today I ended up with something a little more architectural than my other posts this month, take a look.

It's pretty cool, I think it's probably the most abstract thing I've done so far. I really can't tell you what it is, it just came to be. There's no particular convention used in lighting it, nor any other intentional design motif, it was just fun to work on.

That's all for tonight! Check back tomorrow for something new!

Saturday, May 9, 2015

Hey everyone, time for another update!

I really liked what I posted yesterday a lot; it was super fun to work on, and the end result was something I loved. Today I tried to revisit that style and draw something new, let's see how it turned out.

Without tooting my own horn (too much), I think this one's awesome! It's got a really nice amount of contrast, and the light and dark parts are juxtaposed in such a way to really draw your eye in to the focal point of the image. Speaking of eyes and focal points, I love the eyes of the figure in this piece, they're super expressive. This almost looks like a still image taken from a movie I could definitely see myself watching, I think it's got a really neat cinematic look to it.

Anyway, that's all for tonight. I hope you enjoyed this one, I'm pretty proud of it! Don't forget to check back tomorrow for something new!

Friday, May 8, 2015

Hey everyone, it's time for another update!

Here's what I've got for you today.

I really like the way this one turned out, it's probably my favorite doodle so far. This one's really a bit more than a doodle though, as I spent a little more time on it than the others, but I'll let that slide. It was just too cool looking not to give a little extra attention. This was a really fun experiment in creating texture and light, I love the way the ovoid shape turned out, the reflection's really neat.

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Thursday, May 7, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time again!

Here's today's doodle.

Today's doodle turned into a quick environmental sketch. I like the strange shape of the mountains in the background, I also like the negative space created by them against the sky. That's always a nice little bonus to find in a piece, it gives it a little extra something.

That's all for today, check back tomorrow for something new!

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time again.

Here's the doodle of the day.

I wanted to sketch something that had a metallic look to it, so I made sure to add some nice highlights and shadows in this piece to showcase that. I think it came out pretty neat.

Make sure to check back tomorrow for another doodle! Thanks for stopping by!

Tuesday, May 5, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time again.

Here's today's doodle.

This one looks like a full moon rising behind a plume of smoke, or maybe a precariously perched egg in a nest. I wonder what I'll come up with tomorrow?

Check back again to find out!

Monday, May 4, 2015

Hey everyone, time for another update!

Here's today's doodle.

I tried something different again tonight, and I like it! It's got a really cool texture to the strokes in the figure, thanks to adding the noise option to my brush. It's got some really nice movement in it too, which makes it all the more interesting. I'm really enjoying experimenting  with different styles, it  has only been a few days since the month started, and I think I've come up with several unique pieces.

That's all for tonight, check back tomorrow for something new!

Sunday, May 3, 2015

Hey everyone, it's update time again.

Here's today's doodle.

This one's a bit different from the last two, it's an environmental sketch. The darkest lines in the image are the lines I sketched first, then I filled in the rest. After that was done I added in the highlights. It reminds me of some of the rock formations I saw when my family and I took a trip to Arizona. I'd really love to revisit this image and paint it with traditional media, that might be a fun project sometime in the future!

That's all for tonight, check back tomorrow for something new!

Saturday, May 2, 2015

Hey everyone, time for another update!

Here's the doodle of the day!

This sketch kind of reminds me of old pop-art for some reason. It has sort of an abstracted vintage comic book feel to me. I suppose it should have a bit more contrast, but I'm pretty happy with it over all.

That's all for tonight, check back tomorrow for something new!

Friday, May 1, 2015

Hey everyone, today's the first post a new month, so that means a new theme!

I feel like I haven't been doing all that much sketching lately, so I think May's a perfect month to work on a digital sketchbook. I'm limiting myself to one canvas size, 1000 x 1000 pixels, and I'll be posting one sketch a day for each day this month.

Now that we've got a quick explanation of the theme out of the way, here's my first sketch.

I never really sketch with anything specific in mind, so each sketch is always a surprise for me. This one turned out a bit like a portrait of a cloaked figure that's glancing right at you, kinda cool!

Check back tomorrow for a new sketch!
